We are extremely disappointed that students on Manchester Students’ Union’s Senate voted to reject peace, dialogue, and coexistence, in favour of a divisive BDS campaign that left many Jewish students present in a state of distress.

On the night, Jewish students who argued against the motion were made to feel as if their concerns about their potential marginalisation were not being heard. Despite offering alternatives that included creating a discussion forum to engage with the Israeli-Palestinian debate, many on the Senate believed that a targeted BDS tactic was more constructive than any form of engagement.

The strong and robust opposition against the motion is testament to the incredible work done by students ahead of the debate and on the night. We will continue to work with them to oppose BDS at Manchester, instead promoting positive and constructive debate on Israel and Palestine.

It is clear that many Jewish students are concerned about the potential ramifications that this motion could have, and we will support them to ensure that Manchester Students’ Union listens to and acts upon those that have been raised.
