Aberdeen Jsoc:
The AU Jewish Society is a cultural society committed to providing students with a flavour of Judaism. We provide recreational and social activities where members can meet other Jewish and non-Jewish students. We also provide the opportunity to enter national events, and to be involved in the local community.
We are a small society where students and staff of the University are well represented, and we often meet up with members of the local synagogue. We are becoming more and more involved in inter-faith events on campus with strong links with both the Christian and Muslim Societies.
We are affiliated to the Northern Region of Jewish Students, a group for students in the North East and Scotland, who run annual Shabbatons, BBQs and Burns Balls. Its a great opportunity for students in the area to meet, bond, learn, pray, socialise and have fun!
Kosher food:
Some kosher food is available in the area, see http://www.aberdeenhebrew.org.uk/kashrut.html
Local community and synagogue:
There is a Jewish community in the area, Aberdeen Hebrew Congregation. http://www.aberdeenhebrew.org.uk/synagogue.html.
Although our numbers may be small, we are a thriving community; sadly without a permanent rabbi, but we do host a series of social, cultural and religious events throughout the year. Visitors are always welcome to our shul, and indeed on many occasions visitors have helped us make a minyan.
Jewish life in Aberdeen can be challenging at times, but it is also very interesting and rewarding. Our shul is the cornerstone of spiritual life for many of our local Jewish families and friends.
