University Open Days http://www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/visiting/opendays/exeter/
JSoc Region Central (though south west)
JSoc Size c.50 members
JSoc Notes:
We're a very small J-Soc, but that doesn't stop us from having fun! The J-Soc here at Exeter is less "a society" per se and more a close-knit group of friends. One of the main focuses of our events is to increase our membership--as our 50 members nowhere near reflects the number of Jewish students at the university.
Some of our previous events have included:
'Casino Royale' Black-tie Chanukah party
Holocaust survivor talks
'What does it mean to be Jewish' discussion groups
Biblical Hebrew lessons
Weekly (and winning!) presence at Guild (SU) Pub Quiz
Sukkah Building
...But this list is by no means exhaustive.
Campus Notes; nightlife, places to eat and drink etc.
The uni (aside from the Tremough campus in Cornwall) is split into two campuses, both just minutes from the centre of town. Streatham, the main campus, is where most students are based and it's a great place to be. The library's open 24hrs a day and there are several eateries, cafes and spaces to chill out. Lots of green space, too. There are a number of Hall bars in addition to the campus nightclub. There are also great gym facilities.
Exeter as a city is obviously a lot smaller than most, but the nightlife is great. There's a decent number of clubs, bars and some fab restaurants. The theatre scene also comes highly recommended and rarely a night goes by without a few live music events.
Local Synagogue Information
Exeter boasts one of the oldest synagogues in the country, but no Rabbi. Services at the Shul alternate between traditional and progressive. We have a very good relationship with the synagogue, and students do not need to be members to attend services.
Local Community Information
Like the J-Soc, the local community is fairly small but very close as a result, and very friendly towards students.
