Oxford Brookes is a part of Oxford J-Soc

J-Soc Notes

Oxford J-Soc organises social, educational as well as religious events for students of all shades of observance. With prestigious speakers, bagel brunches, social events and of course Friday night meals, Jsoc provides a unique opportunity to mix with other Jewish students.

Jewish Student Testimonies

"Coming to J-Soc from a non-religious background is not that scary. The J-Soc in Oxford is cross-communal, which means that it's there for all Jews, regardless of their denomination, beliefs or upbringing. I was lucky enough to have a Jewish society at my school. My motivation was somewhat the same once at Oxford. The OJC (Oxford Jewish Centre) off Walton Street in Jericho hosts an Israeli administered cuisine capable of traditional Jewish fare. Next year there is promise of an even wider variety of meals - so come and check it out!

There are services on Friday and most Saturdays - tailored to different branches of Judaism - Masorti, Reform, Liberal and Orthodox. Another good aspect to the religious calendar is that Jsoc will also use the opportunity of a festival to invite an interesting speaker to address the society.

Jsoc is about what you want to get out of it. If all you want is a 3-course meal on Friday night - you've got it. If you want to network with other colleges (and may I add that this is the best way I've experienced of meeting people from other colleges) - you've got that too.

The nature of J-Soc to make sure that anyone looking lonely will not remain so for long. All of the people on the J-Soc Committee are sociable types who are on the lookout for more members all the time. They'll do their utmost to make it a pleasant experience to keep you coming to the J-Soc events in the future.

Campus Notes

If you look hard enough while you're here, you'll still find traces of the stereotype that you see in the media: boater-wearing, rowing, punting, Pimms-drinking rah students. This isn't what regular life here is like, though, unless you want it to be - and in fact, by the time you've settled in, you might even find that a summer term hanging around the river in the sun isn't so bad anyway.

Kosher Food & Accommodation

There are Shabbat and weekday evening meals at the Oxford Jewish Centre. The Chabad Centre has a cafe open during the day.

Local Community Information

The Congregation is unique in Britain, supporting Orthodox, Masorti and Progressive services under one roof; for information about services, click here. The Congregation is also extremely supportive of the Jewish student community in Oxford, providing the base for many of J-Soc's events and subsidising meals on weeknights and Sabbaths.
