Newcastle and Northumbria JSOC:

Newcastle/Northumbria JSOC are a close knit JSOC that provides for all types of students in the Newcastle and Northumbria region.

We cater for students of all backgrounds whether you go to Shul three times a day or just once a year. We are not just a religious society, we hold social, educational and religious events.

The aim of the society is to hold events which allow Jewish Students of all backgrounds to come together, everyone is welcome!

Every year we run many different events both social and educational. Regular events include; Friday Nights, Shabbat Meals, Bagel Lunches, Drinks Gatherings, Union Quiz team,Cinema & Comedy Club Trips, Educational talks / presentations, Dinner and Discussions,

We also have special events throughout the year such as:

  • Fireworks Night: Our now famous Fireworks Night has been featured in both the Jewish Chronicle and Jewish Telegraph. Large fireworks, great food, chocolate fountain and plenty of booze ensures the night goes with a real bang! Nobody does this night like us!
  • Sukkot Crawl: A highly popular event, which sees us travel to 4 different Sukkot, we have drinks in the first, starters in the second, mains in the third and desert in the fourth!
  • Northern Region Weekend: We team up with all the other J-Socs in the North including Durham and Scotland for one big weekend! Friday Night, Saturday Lunch & a big Saturday Night finale is how it works! Just be prepared for two late nights and plenty of great food!
  • Burns Ball:  Join us in Scotland for their annual charity Burns Ball, it's always a great night, so get your kilts at the ready!

Kosher Food and Accommodation:

The Newcastle Hillel House is a strictly kosher facility and is suitably prepared for use during festival periods such as Pesach to cater for Jewish students of all levels of observance.

Local Synagogue Information:

There currently exist two communities in Newcastle:

  • Newcastle Hebrew Congregation.
  • Newcastle Reform Synagogue.

Both Synagogues are very welcoming and delighted to see students at services or community events

We welcome any suggestions for events, so if you would like to see an event happen let us know, remember it's your J-Soc!

Feel free to check out the website and e-mail the address above. Alternatively if you wish to find out more about Newcastle/Northumbria JSOC you can contact the National Development Officer for the region at josh.m@ujs.org.uk .
