When the University of Sussex was born in the late 1960s, Jewish life in Brighton was buzzing. Sadly it was not to last and the Jewish community slowly began to fade away, and Brighton's attraction for Jewish students went with it. However, in the years that followed Brighton and Sussex JSoc has been revived going from strength to strength, growing in size year after year by engaging the Jewish students of Brighton and Sussex as well as the community

We are proud to be a part of the thriving local Jewish community. The Jsoc has been growing faster and stronger then ever possibly foreseen, with Friday night dinners regularly attracting upwards of 30 people, not to mention the variety of educational and social events, meaning that there's always something on, appealing to Jewish students. Our recent development has been reflected in the 'Most Developed Society of the Year' prize awarded to us by the Union of Jewish Students last year, a testimony we are truly proud of.

In just the first term of the 09/10 academic year we put on a Jewish comedy night, Charity Chanukkah party featuring a fantastic live band, comedic rapper and doughnuts aplenty, raising funds for Darfur. We have also hosted a brilliantly fun kid's party with giant twister, Jenga and delicious Chinese food, jumping from our kid's party to a far more sophisticated affair with our elegant cheese and wine night and not forgetting our weekly lunch and learn's with the support of our resident chaplains Rabbi Russ Shulkes and his wife Esther.

The Jsoc has a wide array of events held on a regular basis that attract all different kinds of Jewish and non Jewish students alike, looking for different things from their Jsoc. Our Friday night dinners are great for socializing and give students a taste of home with a delicious 3 course meal, featuring the infamous chicken soup. Our Chanukah and Purim parties are legendary and not to be missed. Those seeking to learn more about Judaism lunch and learn sessions run by our chaplain or guest speaker, which are always full of rich discussion and debate.

Brighton and Sussex Jsoc is always welcoming and perfect for the intelligent, fun loving and diverse bunch of students that make up Brighton and Sussex Universities.
