Last night, UJS were made aware that Trinity College, Dublin had extended an invitation to the BNP to participate in debate of the motion,'This House Believes Immigration Has Gone Too Far.'
Trinity ought to take heed from what has happened in the past when BNP members have appeared on UK campuses. As was witnessed at Durham and Oxford Universities; publicity stunts, such as these, tear apart student communities and contribute to a hostile environment for Jewish students on campus.
UJS has always been at the forefront of the campaign for anti-racist and anti-fascist behaviour; from supporting the 'No Platform Policy' within the National Union of Students (NUS) from the 1970s onwards, to standing up to the English Defence League (EDL) when they claimed to speak on behalf of the Jewish community.
For these reasons, UJS will always stand up against hatred on campus, whether it take the form of radical Islamist actions or in the form of the BNP, EDL or any other group that brings the potential for hostility to campus.
