York Student Union's Racial Equality Officer resigns over Anti-Semitic Comments

17/10/2011
York Student Union's (YUSU) Racial Equality Officer Lawrence Binitie's comments on the social media website Facebook have lead to his forced resignation.

The Jewish Society at York University said that they were, 'both surprised and disappointed by the remarks made by Lawrence Binitie regarding Israel and Judaism.' They also said that they, 'would expect YUSU and its entire staff to treat our society and its members with the same respect and tolerance granted to students of all other nationalities and faiths.'

York JSoc further said: 'We of course condemn his remarks but are grateful for Mr. Binitie's apology and regret that these events should have resulted in his resignation. We look forward to working with the YUSU Race and Equality Officer in the future and have every hope that this situation will not affect our good relationship with YUSU.'
