SoAct is the social action arm of the Zionist Youth Council (ZYC). Currently they are volunteering with asylum seekers in the UK fleeing from persecution and lacking the basic necessities such as food and clothing.
Jess Nyman from Noam tells us more about her experience of the project and how to get involved.
A few weeks ago, 9 movement workers from Noam, RSY Netzer, LJY Netzer and Habonim went along to the New North London Synagogue (NNLS) drop-in centre for destitute asylum seekers from all over the world.
The drop-in centre is the biggest in the UK, and gives legal advice, medical advice and counseling as well as food, drink and a social environment.
SoAct have decided to support this fantastic centre this year, and each month movement workers will be going to volunteer there to lead by example social action in their movements.
Our first day was a great success. SoAct members did a wide range of activities from sorting clothes to getting punched by toddlers, making tea and making chat, managing the queue and managing the coffee making, and taking time to listen to people and their stories.
It was both a humbling and empowering experience and we look forward to continuing our work there.
SoAct will be volunteering again on Sunday 5th February and would love YOU to join us.
