There were QCs, Partners, Associates, Trainees and Pupils there to discuss their legal careers at every level so that the students gained insight into day-to-day life in a law firm or barristers chambers.
The informal environment enabled students to ask all their questions while enjoying an evening of wine, canapés and legal discussion.
We were also honoured to host the Rt Hon Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, the newly appointed, President of the Supreme Court. This was his first public engagement since he was sworn in at the opening of the legal year and he not only addressed the audience of students but engaged in a Q and A, answering questions from the UJS President and audience about why he pursued a career in law and its highlights.
Revealing how he started his career as a Barrister and then a Judge, he reassured the audience in a jovial manner stating, 'nobody's perfect, that's what insurance is for.' The warm, friendly and open manner in which he addressed and engaged with the audience left a lasting impression on those in attendance.
Current student of the GDL at Westminster University said that the event was, 'very interesting, motivating. I thought the comments given by Lord Neuberger gave a good insight as to the path he has taken.' And final year student of the LPC Daniel Flowers summarised the evening by stating, 'great speaker, great guests, great chat.'
UJS President Alex Green and former law student himself stated, 'There are many moments, which I will look back on with the fondest of memories. Interviewing the new President of the Supreme Court, Lord Neuberger in front of 50 budding lawyers is definitely going to be one of them!'
