One of the commitments I had to make this year was to live in Birmingham for a fourth year, in a central location to travel around the J Socs in my region working as a National Development Officer (NDO). This meant that I would rarely spend time in the London office and concequently I would be working from my room in Birmingham. However every 2 weeks on a Monday there is a Tzevet meeting in London that Elana Wall (Northern NDO) and I come down for.
A Monday morning in the office always involves a chat about everyone’s weekend, the football and most importantly the UJS Hillel fantasy league that we have set up online and that most people in the office are part of. I am currently second in the league, with Richard Verber top of the league. It often also involves the General manager of UJS and Hillel – Dan Marcus, who is a passionate Arsenal fan giving me his theory on football and the weekends results. I often disagree with many of his theories such as ‘Owen is a world class finisher and should be going to the world cup’.
The office is always buzzing on a Monday morning with everyone back in the office, people having problems with their phones and laptop and the phones continuously ringing.
The next part of the day is choosing what to eat for lunch. We have the menu on the wall next to a white board where everyone writes on what they want. Before every Tzevet meeting someone from the UJS Tzevet or Hillel will run a lunch and learn on any interesting topic that relates to Judaism or Israel.
On Monday the 1st Feb I decided to go for a margarita pizza and not my normal pasta with tomato sauce and melted cheese. This gave me something to look forward to all morning.
I spent the morning replying to emails and phone calls whilst also preparing the finishing touches to the Lunch and Learn I would be running before the Tzevet meeting.
We were honoured and privileged to have Royi Gutkin, who now works for UJIA running Birthright with us for the lunch and learn and Tzevet meeting. Once the food had arrived we all sat down, tucked in to our food, and I started with my lunch and learn on Judaism’s approach to Alcohol. It raised some interesting debates concerning Booze for Jews and what UJS’s approach should be.
Following the Lunch and Learn, we had our Tzevet meeting where each team within gave an overview of what they have been up to and what is coming up in the next 2 weeks.
The day followed with a Development team and Emma Rickman (Events and Marketing) meeting on the upcoming Shabbat UK (5th March). It was a chance for us all to fill each other in on the different stages of the project. My role for Shabbat UK is logistically based, and I need to make sure all orders are up on our database in the coming week. For those reading this that have yet to hear about it and wish to find out more, see the facebook group or be in touch with your Development officer.
Often after a Tzevet meeting day, the Development team have NDO fun time, where someone in the team will plan something to do after work but not tell anyone what it is. This week we were lead by Richard Verber (Director of Education and Social Action) to play bingo round the corner from the office.
We were all hopeless, won nothing, had a couple of half chances, watched everyone around us winning and sat there having some non work related fun.
We then all got the northern line towards Golders Green and Edgware and went off home. My day was yet to end though. On the 19th Feb, Moshe Baron (Bristol Chaplain), Russ Shukles (Brighton Chaplain), Richard Verber and I are running a fun regional Shabbaton in Bournemouth. The day ended with a conference call discussing the Shabbaon and the plans for it.
That is a summary of my day on the 1st February 2010. I look forward to sharing more of my daily routines with you.
Much love
Josh x
