UJS SUPPLY JEWISH STUDENTS WITH BBQS TO CELEBRATE ID:60

Monday 12th of May 2008

All last week, JSocs up and down the UK were treated to the UJS GRILL TOUR traveling the country giving out food and BBQs to celebrate 60 Years since the Founding of the State of Israel.

Here are some of the events that took place.

BRISTOL

On Thursday 8th May Bristol Jewish Society hosted a celebration for Israel's 60th birthday with food, music and decorations galore! Over 40 students took time out of revision to visit the Ark and Dove centre and enjoy a traditional Yom Ha’atzmaut BBQ. The beautiful weather bought back memories of spending time in Israel as the students enjoyed meat, salad, humus and the slightly less traditional lunchtime beer! This was definitely better then a normal student lunch!

In the evening the Jewish society joined with the local community of Bristol for an event to celebrate together which included food, dancing and live music!

NOTTINGHAM

Over 100 people came together to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut in Nottingham.
The Burning Bush Jewish Student Centre was transformed into Israel, with The Galilee, Tel Aviv, and their delightful Bedouin tent. There was a huge banquet feast, with burgers, sausages, salads, and lots more, which let people celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut true Israeli style.
UJS ran a Remembrance Day ceremony for everyone there, with readings and songs to mark the day and to remember the hardships that Israel has had to fight for to get to where it is today.
This was all before the house party started in their amazing student centre, for everyone to celebrate Israel 60th Birthday until the early hours.

SUSSEX

The University of Sussex students celebrated Israel’s 60th birthday by having a ‘Taste of Israel’ table in the middle of the campus. Throughout the day, various students, professors, and other campus professionals stopped by the table to sample a taste of Israel’s best and most classic foods, such as falafel, pita, hummus, wafers, and even animal crackers.
Many commented on how nice it was to see Israel celebrated on campus, and the support was outstanding.
Throughout the day there was also Israeli music playing, and the beautiful weather made the event a great success.
Thanks very much to all the University of Sussex Jsoc members for their hard work and determination to enable others to celebrate Israel’s birthday on Yom Haatzmaut.

WARWICK

Another amazing event in an ever-growing Jsoc saw 35 people attend the Jsoc Israel 60 BBQ. A chilled out afternoon saw students feasting on burgers, sausages and salads and of course pickles. People brought friends along to experience Israeli culture with flyers and photographs of the country along with some authentic Israelis!

UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA (NORWICH)

25 people attended the biggest event of the year on Wednesday, when UEA
Jewish society along with the chaplain Rabbi Fishman celebrated 60 years
of Israel with a BBQ in the park. It was a wonderful afternoon which saw
a lot of new faces take part in this Jsoc event.

Jsoc President Nicole Hazan said:
"We have had an amazing year and it is always nice to finish the year with a bang in a bit of sunshine! We are looking forward to treating next terms freshers to bigger and better events by the Jsoc."

This year the Jsoc has been going from strength to strength doubling in
size and putting on more and more events.
