Approx Jewish Students on campus - 40 approx

Glasgow J-Soc was re-established in 2006 and since then has gone from strength to strength. We are a small but active J-Soc catering for students at all the Universities and Colleges in the West of Scotland. We have a wide range of events throughout the year, including weekly bagel lunches with our Chaplain Rabbi Yossi, regular Shabbat Dinners near to the University Campuses, a weekly Jewish study group, and excellent social events including SubCrawls (a famous Glasgow tradition, come along to find out more!), Pub Nights, Quizzes and Movie Nights.

Our Chaplains host meals at their home for all of the Jewish festivals, to which all members are warmly welcomed. We are also supported by the Union of Jewish Students who provide a huge number of educational and social opportunities for Jewish students in the UK. We are lucky to have excellent relationships with the other Scottish J-Socs and enjoy attending their larger events such as Balls, Burns Suppers and Shabbatons. We are an open and pluralist J-Soc with both Jewish and non-Jewish members, ranging from Orthodox to completely Secular, and we strive to make everyone feel comfortable. Please join our Facebook group for details of events, and we look forward to meeting you soon!

Campus Notes

People new to the city always comment on how beautiful it is, not surprising with its stunning architecture. There is always something exciting to do; ranging from amazing club nights and gigs to theatre and exploring the picturesque and readily accessible Scottish countryside

Kosher Food & Accommodation

There is a well-stocked Kosher Deli in the Southside of Glasgow, around 20 minutes from the West End where many students live. There are also supermarkets with Kosher sections. Unfortunately there is no Kosher accommodation offered by any of the Universities in Glasgow but our Chaplains Rabbi Yossi and Sarah ensure that Kosher meals are available for Shabbat and at our weekly Bagel Lunches on Campus.

Local Synagogue Information

Glasgow has four active synagogues, all of which are very welcoming to students. There are students who attend all of the congregations listed who will be happy to make you feel at home.

Giffnock and Newlands Congregation (Orthodox, located in Southside)

Glasgow Reform Synagogue (Reform, located in Southside)

Newton Mearns Hebrew Congregation (Orthodox, located in Southside)

Scottish Jewish Archives Centre (Orthodox/Traditional, located in City Centre and within walking distance from West End)

Local Community Information

The community is very welcoming to students and they love to see new youthful faces at any services. The local chaplaincy is very helpful with organizing joint events and in the past students have loved staying up till the small hours bantering away with the student rabbi, following a delicious Shabbat meal at his house.

About UJS

We are the voice of over 8,500 Jewish students, spanning 60 Jewish Societies (J-Socs) on campuses across the UK and Ireland. We are traditional, progressive, cultural and spiritual; we come from the left, centre and right and can be found across religious and political spectrums.

Together we create and deliver powerful campaigns; fighting prejudice, advancing inclusion, and inspiring education and action on the issues that matter to us.
