The Ultimate Guide to Using AI for Your UJS Application and Interview
At the Union of Jewish Students, we're committed to building an inclusive, diverse team that reflects the vibrant communities we serve. We believe in the potential of AI tools to help candidates present their best selves during the recruitment process, while maintaining the authentic, personal connections that are central to our work.
Our approach to hiring remains fundamentally human-centered. Every application is reviewed by real people who understand the unique challenges and opportunities facing students across the UK. We want to get to know you as an individual and understand your passion for supporting Jewish student life.
Our Philosophy on AI in Recruitment
Using AI tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, Claude, CoPilot or others, to support your application is entirely your choice. We won't use any tools to assess whether you've used AI assistance, but if you choose to use these tools, we want to help you use them effectively and authentically.
Quick Reference: AI Dos and Don'ts for UJS Applications
✅ DO Use AI For:
- Researching Jewish student issues, community trends, and UJS initiatives
- Improving the clarity and structure of your written responses
- Preparing for potential interview questions about student advocacy
- Formatting your application and checking grammar/spelling
- Helping articulate your own experiences and thoughts more clearly
❌ DON'T Use AI For:
- Creating fictional examples of your experience
- Copy-pasting generic responses about Jewish student life
- Answering questions during live interviews
- Generating imaginary scenarios that don't reflect your actual experience
- Replacing your authentic voice and personal perspective
Job Applications: Using AI When Applying to UJS Roles
Our Golden Rule: Refine, Don't Replace
We want to understand what drives your passion for the role you are applying for, your personal connection to the role and our organisational values, and your unique perspective on the challenges facing Jewish students today. AI can help you express these thoughts more clearly, but it cannot replace your authentic experiences and genuine commitment to our mission.
✅ How to Use AI Effectively for Real Experiences
Example Application Question: "Describe a time when you have worked with someone on a project that made a difference or had an impact"
Step 1: Think of a genuine situation from your experience - perhaps something whilst at university, or organizing an event, or in a previous professional role.
Step 2: Write your initial response based on your real experience.
Step 3: Use AI to help improve structure and clarity:
- "Can you help me make this response clearer while keeping my personal voice?"
- "How can I better structure this example to show the impact of my actions?"
Step 4: Review AI suggestions and incorporate only what feels authentic to your voice and experience.
Using AI for Skills-Based Questions
Example Question: "Why are your skills and experience suited to this role at UJS?"
Effective AI Use:
- Ask AI to identify key skills mentioned in the job description
- Reflect on your own experiences that demonstrate these skills and tell AI what these are.
- Use AI to help structure your response, but ensure every example comes from your real experience
Remember: UJS values authentic, conversational communication. If AI suggestions sound overly formal or corporate, adjust them to match how you would naturally speak about your passion for Jewish student life.
❌ What NOT to Do: Avoiding Fictional Examples
DON'T ask AI to:
- "Write an example of successfully combating antisemitism on campus"
- "Create a scenario where I organised a successful cultural event"
- "Generate examples of supporting Jewish students through difficult times"
Why this doesn't work: We'll likely explore your examples in detail during interviews. Fictional scenarios will become apparent quickly and undermine your candidacy.
Interview Preparation: Using AI as Your Research Assistant
Research and Preparation (Highly Recommended!)
AI can be an excellent research partner for understanding:
- Current issues in Jewish student life: Ask AI about recent trends, challenges, and opportunities affecting Jewish students in universities
- UJS history and mission: While you should primarily use our website and resources, AI can help you understand the broader context of student advocacy
- Interview preparation: Input the job description and ask for potential interview questions
- STAR method coaching: AI can help you structure responses using Situation, Task, Action, Result format (or any other format you would like to utilise)
Example prompts:
- "What are the main challenges facing Jewish students in UK universities today?"
- "Help me structure this experience using the STAR method for an interview response"
- "Based on this job description for a UJS role, what questions might I be asked?"
Important Security Note 🔒
Never input confidential information about yourself, your university, or other organisations/companies into AI tools. Be mindful of data privacy and protection.
During Interviews and Assessments
Take-Home Tasks and Written Exercises
If your application includes a take-home task, consider what AI tools you might realistically use in the day-to-day work. For most UJS roles, this might include research assistance or helping draft communications, but the core thinking, strategy, and authentic voice must be yours.
When in doubt, ask! You can email any questions to [email protected] and UJS can provide specific guidance about AI use for any particular task. We value transparency and would much rather you check than worry about overstepping boundaries.
Live Interviews: Keep It Conversational
During video or phone interviews, we want to have genuine conversations about your passion for Jewish student advocacy, your experiences, and your vision for supporting our communities.
What's okay:
- Having notes about your experiences and examples
- Referring to research you've done (including AI-assisted research)
- Taking notes during the conversation
What to avoid:
- Using AI tools live during the interview
- Reading scripted responses generated by AI
- Consulting AI for answers during the conversation
Why this matters: We're not just hiring skills - we're building a team of people who can authentically connect and represent UJS values. This requires genuine human connection and understanding.
The Risk of Over-Relying on AI
Misusing AI might lead to:
- Landing in a role that isn't actually a good fit for your genuine interests and skills
- Missing out on a role because your authentic strengths and passion don't come through
- Struggling in the role because the AI-assisted application didn't reflect your real capabilities
