From Peace Walls to Europe Tour: How UJS Fellowship Shaped My Leadership

My journey as a leader has been greatly enriched by UJS’ fellowship. From learning about peace (and drinking Guinness) in Belfast, to applying leadership lessons while leading Europe Tour, being on the National Council and an NUS Delegate, this fellowship has helped my personal and political development.

Belfast: One of my favourite parts of the UJS Fellowship was our trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. I was so taken aback and inspired to see how these communities, despite decades of violence, were able to come together to build a more peaceful future. Seeing the peace wall and learning about grassroots peace-building efforts gave me insight into the importance of dialogue, empathy, and perseverance.

Leading Europe Tour: Leading Europe Tour this summer was one of the most rewarding but also challenging experiences in my leadership journey. I had to manage the logistics of taking forty-two 16-year-olds around four different countries, but also to create an inclusive group environment, work in a team, and write programmes.

The fellowship boosted my confidence in my own ability and helped me adopt a more patient, empathetic approach, creating an environment where everyone felt heard—lessons I had seen in practice.

Strengthening My Role on National Council: My role as a representative on UJS National Council has been strengthened by the fellowship. The fellowship taught me to approach leadership on the council with a sense of responsibility toward the wider community and consider the needs of the entire student body.

This programme has been an incredible opportunity, for which I am so grateful and would highly recommend. :)
